Worldwide Wind Generation Statistics
All over the world, nations, businesses, and individuals are taking advantage of wind generation. In just a few years, this form of renewable energy has grown dramatically. No longer is it relegated to mills or ship sails. Wind is now a viable form of energy anyone can take advantage of. Although many refer to wind as an alternative form of energy, it is rapidly becoming one of our main sources of energy.
In 1998 the worldwide energy generating capacity for wind passed 10,000 megawatts. Today there are more than 200,000 wind turbines in operation with over 238,000 megawatts of wind power that can be generated. In European Union nations alone, more than 100,000 megawatts of wind power are generated every year. The U.S. and China can both generate over 50,000 megawatts each. From 2000 to 2006, worldwide wind generation capacity more than quadrupled. In fact, it doubles about every three years.
Today Germany, the U.S., and China are all battling to become the world leader in wind power generation capacity. Currently China leads the world in wind power capacity with 26 percent of the total capacity in the world, although the U.S. leads in actual wind power production with 27 percent. The U.K. holds the sixth spot on the list of wind power producing countries and the eighth place on the list for wind power capacity.
More than 80 countries around the world use wind power commercially to create power, and the level of penetration of wind power is also growing in many countries. As much as 28 percent of stationary grid electricity produced in Denmark is done so using wind. About 14 percent of Ireland’s power is also produced from wind. In all, Europe accounts for almost half of the total wind power generation capacity.
One thing that’s important to note is that wind speed does make a big difference in how much power an area of the world is able to produce. Wind speed isn’t constant, so the annual energy production of a wind farm will change a bit from year to year as the amount of wind in the region changes.
The cost of producing power using wind is fairly low on an ongoing basis, although it does carry a moderate capital cost. Simply installing wind turbines is an excellent investment in the future of your business’ or home’s ability to produce its own energy. Also various governments around the world, including the U.K. government, have created incentives for consumers to invest in wind power. Tens of thousands of jobs and billions in economic activity have been generated by wind power investments. The feed-in tariff provided by the U.K. government has made it easier for residents to make an investment into wind.
As you can see, wind power is taking the world by storm, and it’s easy to see why. Investing in wind power just makes a lot of sense for consumers who are conscious of what traditional energy generation is doing for our planet. An investment into wind power is an investment into the future of our planet.
